Abstract | Pelagic fish eggs collected during six consecutive ichthyoplankton surveys of the Irish Sea in 2000 were identified by means of iso-electric focusing and histochemical staining. Temporal and spatial trends in spawning of cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), whiting (Merlangius merlangus) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) were determined from the distributions of early (IA and IB) stage eggs. Patch size at each developmental stage (IA through to V) was determined by variogram analysis. The relationship between early stage egg abundance and environmental parameters was investigated. The spawning locations and periods, as determined by biochemical genetics, were compared with historical data. |
