Abstract
Phytoplankton may release as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) part of the C assimilated during photosynthesis. Excreted DOC may enter the food web after being assimilated by bacteria. Although it appears that only a small portion of photosynthate is released as DOC, the corresponding flux can be significant if photosynthetic rates are high. Determination of DOC production by phytoplankton presents many methodological problems, especially when dealing with natural samples which include different components of the microbial food web. This contribution discusses some of these difficulties, within the framework of a set of data obtained during a cruise carried out during the austral summer of 1995-1996 in the Bransfield and Gerlache Straits (Southern Ocean).
