Abstract | Vanvoorstia incipiens DeClerk, M.J. Wynne et Coppejans sp. nov. (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyta), a large, bushy alga of narrow axes, distinguishable from other species in the genus by its nonplanar habit and its minimal anastomoses, is described from Pongwe (6°02'S, 39°24'E), east coast of Zanzibar Island, Tanzania. The only anastomoses are those made by the final-order bladelets with adjacent penultimate-order blades, and even these occur only occasionally. The new species is also characterized by its overall habit, the narrow width of its blades, and their slight, noncontinuous cortication. Branches bearing tetrasporangia do not anastomose. The sequence of pericentral cell formation has been determined to involve the adaxial pericentral cell being formed first, followed by the pair of lateral pericentral cells, and then by the abaxial pericentral cell. This observation is discussed in reference to previous reports on species in the genus. |
