Abstract | The general features of sea-star reproduction relating to the following areas are reviewed: breeding season, breeding behaviour, brooding, germ cells, maturation, fertilisation, embryonic development, larval development, and chronology of development. There are also sections briefly describing the natural history of adults, the collection and maintenance of both adults and larvae, and an overview of the methods used for experimentation with sea stars. In this review, however, the lesser known aspects of the life history of certain asteroid species are stressed, which include the formation of wrinkled blastulae and developmental patterns involving only a bipinnaria larval or a barrel-shaped larval stage. The different developmental patterns are compared and a nomenclatural system for classifying the various developmental types of larval sea stars is proposed. Those species of sea stars deserving more intensive study, and the areas in need of further research in the future, are discussed. |
