Abstract
The spatial evolution of Antarctic katabatic winds in the area of Terra Nova Bay is examined using the three-dimensional version of the UCL/MAR Modèle Atmosphérique Régional mesoscale primitive equation model. The ability of the model to replicate classical linear and nonlinear mountain waves simulations is verified. Then, a three-dimensional experiment is performed using the terrain configuration of Terra Nova (Ross Sea coastal zone). Because of computational requirements, the discretization is chosen to be 5 km. Results are in good agreement with availahle ohservations and previous modeling work. In particular, the high resolution allows the model to represent the katabatic jet over Terra Nova Bay.
