Abstract
The relationship between nutrient dynamics and production processes on coral reefs is reviewed. The complex cycling of nitrogen and phosphorus is described and sources of nutrients for different classes of reefs are presented. Rates of organic production of atoll reefs and of high island reefs are listed and differences between and among reefs commented upon. The enhancement of organic production by nutrient enrichment is described. While the relationship between concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus and primary production is evident, it is more difficult to predict the change in secondary production. Attention is drawn to the relationship between estimates of gross production and cycling processes and the fact that reef systems do not appear to support high rates of net organic production.
