Abstract
The Aquarium of the University of Liege has been open to public since November 1962. lts design was part of a vast project of the Rector Dubuisson, aiming to enhance marine orientation of our Department of Biology. In 1948, our first presentation of the project occurred at the first International Aquarium Conference, held in Monaco in 1960. "Window open towards the Sea", the Aquarium is devoted to a triple goal, which has been strictly followed since its opening: - Fundamental and applied research: aquarium was, and is still support for numerous teams in aquaculture, behavioural ecology.- University education: aquarium is a living example for biology teaching, and also a place for specialised formation in aquarium science, marine biology. - Science diffusion: aquarium attracts the widest audience (more than 80 thousand visitors a year) to the aquatic environment's beauty, to its diversity, but also to its fragility. Now 40 years old, the aquarium still has many things to say, to do and to show, and wants to face toward the future: science finds its own justification in communication!
