Changes in the annual average high- and low water levels [Veranderingen in de jaargemiddelde hoog- en laagwaterstanden] Citation Contact: van der weck, Arjan Description An increase of the high tides in the estuary since 1955 is generally assumed. This increase amounts to 15 cm in Vlissingen and approximately 25 cm in Bath and Antwerp. The changes in low tide are less dramatic: an increase of 5 cm in Vlissingen, and a decrease of 10 cm in Bath and Antwerp. Although the annual variations are large, it seems that the biggest changes occurred between 1970 and 1980. This applies for the high tides and the low tides at Bath and Antwerp.
The first deepening occurred during this period, so that there may be a causal link. Also, in 1967 the levees of ‘Ballastplaat’ and ‘Schaar van Ouden Doel’ were constructed. The possible effects of this on the vertical tides would have a more direct, and permanent, character.
