Description
The HABMAP project was set up to address the need for better spatial awareness of habitat distributions in the southern Irish Sea, and aimed to provide seabed habitat maps that could be used for conservation and management. more

The HABMAP project aimed to:

  • produce modelled seabed habitat (biotope) maps with an indication of degree of confidence,
  • gather new benthic data from several areas within the southern Irish Sea,
  • provide recommendations for future seabed mapping work.

The main objective of the HABMAP survey work was to collect data that could be used to validate modelled biotope distribution outputs arising from the project, as well as to map a range of different areas in the southern Irish Sea. A combination of accoustic and ground-truthing sample techniques were employed on two cruises undertaken during the summer of 2005.
