Description Pro Delphinus is a Peruvian NGO whose aim is to implement an integrated approach to marine fauna conservation. Our projects focus heavily on applied research, environmental education, awareness raising and training among local communities. By educating the local populous and relying heavily on the involvement of local researchers we hope to ensure the long term conservation of Peru’s marine species.
Our satellite tracking project is the first telemetry study of loggerhead turtles in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The presence of loggerheads in this region was only recently verified. “Cabezona” (big head) or “Amarilla” (yellow) are the local names for this species. The goal of this study is to improve our understanding of loggerhead habitat use, migration and foraging patterns in the southeastern Pacific. We began our telemetry study in 2003 and have released 15 loggerhead turtles with satellite transmitters.
