Marine Molluscs of Augusto Nobre [Moluscos Marinhos de Augusto Nobre] Citation Matos R. M. A., 2007. Inventário dos Moluscos marinhos de Portugal Continental existentes no Museu de História Natural da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto, Museu de História Natural da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto, Porto https://doi.org/10.15468/jhiie1 Contact: Santos, António Availability: Unrestricted The data are freely available to anybody and may be used for any purpose. Usage acknowledgement may be required Description Marine mollusks collected along the continental Portuguese coast by Augusto Nobre (former director of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Porto) between 1884 and 1939. The collection consists of dry shells of specimens belonging to the Phylum Mollusca (classes Gastropoda, Polyplacophora, Bivalvia and Cephalopoda). more Study extent - The collection includes mostly coastal species (from intertidal to 10-20m depth) collected by hand or by local fishermen, from the Portuguese coast, including some estuarine species. Sampling description - Sampling extends from 1884 to 1939 and was done by Augusto Nobre on an occasional basis. The collection also includes a few specimens sampled by his contemporary fellows (namely the botanist G. Sampaio) or borrowed from other collections (e.g., G. Batalha). Quality control - The collection is part of a larger set of specimens which served as the basis for Augusto Nobre's work "Moluscos Marinhos de Portugal" published between 1939-1940. It was recently revised bu Rolanda Matos in the late 1990s (work published in 2007) who records 885 boxes, each containing from one to several specimens. As of today, four boxes are missing, the remaining 881 being stored at the Museum of Natural History of the University of Porto and listed in the present data set. For most specimens there is a precise location and sampling date. According to Rolanda Matos (2007) sampling dates range from 1884 to 1939, with most being done during the 1930s. Some labels do not include a date, for which a range between 1884-1939 was attributed. Method Steps - The dataset was retrieved from the current database (indexrerum) and exported to specify. Latitude and longitude were estimated using GeoLocate (http://www.museum.tulane.edu/geolocate/). Determinations were done by Rolanda Matos (2007) and names were converted, when necessary, to fit the classification of Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) used in WoRMS and COL.
