Description
We revisited the Tara Oceans zooplankton collection aiming to enlarge the latitudinal gradient of copepod diversity in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean, which provided a unique opportunity to access a large variety of ecosystems, from tropical to polar waters, identifying copepods to the species level using morphological taxonomy. The sampling were carried out with a zooplankton WP2 net (200µm). The dataset contains: (1) sampling and environmental data, (2) raw counts, composition and taxonomic identification of the copepod species community, and (3) copepod traits data. more

There is a growing consensus about the need to assess the multifaceted marine biodiversity by analyzing morphological taxonomy and biological traits to link the biodiversity and ecosystem functioning relationships (BEF) to environmental variability. To unravel the copepod biodiversity, we merge three subjects: taxonomic versus functional diversity indices, trait-environment gradients and biodiversity and ecosystem relationships. We integrated the samplings in the Southern Brazilian shelf to the Tara Oceans expeditions at different biogeographic zones, from tropical to polar, throughout the Southwestern Atlantic up to the Southern Ocean. To assess the link between functional traits and environmental characteristics, we clustered the 94 species into functional groups based on the combination of five functional traits and estimated functional diversity indices.
