Abstract | The accelerated development of aquaculture in Latin America and, according to the fisheries statistics, particularly in Chile has been possible due to the expansion of the farming area rather than an increased output per unit farming area. However, social, ecological and economical pressures will, in time, permit greater efficiency of such aquaculture production systems. There are various means to achieve this goal: improved husbandry, nutrition and disease control, and genetic improvements of the farmed species. The potential for improving performance by genetic means is unquestionably substantial. In Latin America limited genetic research activities applied to aquaculture have been carried out, however, those conducted indicate that genetic enhancement programmes in bivalve molluscs would be justified based on the heritability of economically important genetic traits in selection programmes. |
