Abstract | Proximate and ultimate factors influencing clustering behaviour in the mangal-dwelling hermit crab Clibanarius laevimanus Buitendijk 1937 were studied in Kenya. First, a reasonable hypothesis to understand the homing performance of this species is menotactic or compass orientation towards the tidal current. Second, clustering may serve as a ''shell exchange market'' for those specimens who were wearing inappropriate shells. |
