Description
The dataset contains plastic data collected in July and August 2021 at the port of Ostend, Belgium, on four slipways (the Marine Station of Ostend - MSO, Fisheries, Ferry, and Eastern stretch dam slipways). Plastic type, count, weight, brand sources, accumulation rate, and polymer content are reported, following the OSPAR commission guidelines for monitoring marine litter for the classification of observed and (hand) collected items. An initial assessment of the standing stock was done, followed by an accumulation survey, done twice in each location, at a two-week interval. A randomly selected subsample was analyzed for the brand audit. In the laboratory, the polymer content of a randomly selected subsample of plastic items was analyzed, using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). more

There are two versions of the same dataset stored together in a zip file: 1. Oostende_litterdata_VLIZ: This version contains all the data collected during the research. 2. Oostende_litterdata_EMODnet: This version contains only the fields that are needed to submit the data to the EMODnet Chemistry data portals. In the sheet "Litter" there are only 318 samples compared to the 341 samples in the "Oostende_litterdata_VLIZ" dataset. This is because the classification of the plastic items in the EMODnet dataset had to be aggregated to follow a less specific and wider classification according to OSPAR guidelines. Before submission to EMODnet, the dataset passed the EMODnet Beach Litter Format Validator that checks the correctness and approval of the generated files.
