Abstract
Objectives
1. to understand the connection between chemical diversity and ecological role of marine secondary metabolites
2. to investigate what environmental factors trigger their production by profiling metabolite pattern from micro- and macroorganisms in presence or absence of stressing factors
3. to compare the biological activity of secondary metabolites and distinguish those that act as allelochemicals and growth inhibitors, or induce antifouling, feeding deterrency, toxicity and death
4. to differentiate between the effects induced due to nutritional deficiency and from those induced by toxins and growth inhibitors
5. to study the biochemical pathways and the biochemical control that underlie synthesis of secondary metabolites
6. to exchange samples for chemical and biological screening among network members
7. to intercalibrate methods
8. to set up a system of short sabbaticals to gain experience in techniques not available at home institutes or to teach this experience elsewhere
9. to organise two practical courses on chemical ecology, the first of natural products isolation and the second on bioassay methods

Description of work
Task 1. organize a kick-off workshop in 2005 to compare metabolites, calibrate existing methods and suggest new protocols in Ischia (Naples), Italy
Task 2. organize a training course on methods of natural products isolation and characterization in 2006 in Pozzuoli (Naples), Italy
Task 3. organize a training course on bioassay methods in 2006 in Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, Sweden
Task 4. organize a workshop on chemical ecology in 2007 in Villefranche, France
Task 5. write a review article on Chemical Ecology in Europe
Task 6. short-term sabbaticals by researchers and students in other laboratories
Task 7. Sharing of infrastructures (boats, flow cytometer, confocal and electron microscopes, NMR, GC-MS)
Task 8. Workshop in 2008 (in the frame of a general MarBEF meeting) to discuss final results
Task 9. Final report
