Abstract
The paper summarizes the main species of bivalve molluscs cultured in Chile, as well as the state of development in which they find themselves, at distinct stages of development: a) pilot, b) technology transfer and c) commercial. It discusses the factors affecting their growth in natural and controlled conditions, including: quality and quantity of diet, water temperature, density of the organisms and water quality associated with the cultivation. Finally, problems that inhibit the sustainability of these resources in Chile are discussed and challenges and recommendations are proposed to tackle such.
