In the last decade there has been a great deal of technology which has surfaced from the intense experimentation in the aquaculture field. A prime opportunity for inland farmers lies in the facet of geothermal prawn-farming. This newly-developed technique applied to rich geothermal areas may produce a whole new industry even in winter months for inland areas deprived of fresh seafood due to high transportation cost and low quality marketing. The Malaysian prawn is a rich source of protein which can be produced on several differently scaled operations which are not only economically feasible but provide a suitable income for semi-intensive operations of any size. Due to the increasing demand tor an alternate protein source, Macrobrachium rosenbergii is superior to red meat in that it is more easily digested and can be prepared with many different types of foods. Successful prawn farming in rich geothermally suitable areas offers a whole new opportunity in business utilization of a natural resource and a product which will promote a healthier population in years to come.
