Abstract
The execution of consolidation test is crucial to understand the behavior of in-situ mud layers in time and space. Understanding this behavior is a tool for managing the dredging operations in area’s with a siltation of a lot of fines. The type of dredging techniques, the dredging frequency and related dredging cost is bound to the type of sediment. The energy needed to manipulate the cohesive mud layer depends on the resident time of the mud-layer, the amount of sediment and the type of sediment. To understand and predict the evolution of the cohesive sediment, consolidation column tests with representative in-situ sediment are crucial. This technical note is the result of an thorough brainstorming by a scientific and technical team. The technical note has been created to separate the brainstorming from the resulting project plan (12_082). The technical and scientific team exist of the following members: Msc. Claeys Styn (Projectleader 2012-2014 (Antea, WL); Dr. Staelens Peter (Dotocean); Ing. Van Hoestenberghe Thomas (Antea); Dr. Ing. Van Oyen Tomas (Projectleader 2014-2015); ir. Vanlede Joris; Prof. Dr. Ir Toorman Erik. and consolidation column manufacturer.
