Abstract
Detailed information about the improved fishing gear and equipment that has been produced in recent years is so extensive and complicated that it cannot be given in full in this volume; but it is so important that readers should know of these trends that Commander Hurgess was asked to give a concise summary of the development that is proceeding so that those interested should be able to make further inquiries. The bookmodern Fishing Gear of the World which resulted from the Congress on Fishing Gear organized by the Fisheries Division FAO at Hamburg in 1957 is really the most complete repository of modern knowledge on the subject that has ever been published. It was edited by Hilmar Kristjohnsson chief of the Gear Section, Fisheries Division FAO. The book was issued by Fishing News (Hooks) Ltd., London in May 1959. Since then there has been continued progress in certain fields and that progress is constantly placed on record by Commander Burgess in his contributions in the weekly issues of Fishing News.
