| Abstract |
Underwater photography from either ships or submersibles is an indispensable technique in both qualitative and quantitative studies of sea-floor life. Besides showing this life in its natural state, photography enables more random sampling of epifauna than do methods involving the collection of samples by dredge, grab or trawl. To obtain maximum information, photography (in monochrome and color) and collecting methods must be used together. In this way much can be learned about such aspects as the ecology, feeding habits, methods of locomotion, reaction to light and temperature, community formation, and population densities of underwater life. |
