Abstract
The connective tissue of the mantle in Mytilus edulis comprises adipogranular (ADG) and vesicular (VCT) cells. During gametogenesis there is a decline in the volume of ADG tissue coincident with an increase in the volume of gametes. The loss of ADG cell mass is due to lysosomally mediated autolysis, evidenced by an increase in the activity of hydrolytic enzymes. During the later stages of gametogenesis there is a decline in the glycogen content of the mantle. An ultrastructure study demonstrated membrane-bound vesicles containing glycogen, within both the ADG and the VCT cells. Glycogen sequestration within autophagosomes provides a mechanism for the controlled hydrolysis of glycogen. During conditions of stress, however, ADG cell mass, and glycogen, are lost without a concomitant increase in gamete volume.
