Abstract
This paper describes the use of a Bow Steering Module fitted with a Voith Schneider Propeller. It is the main task of the BSM to generate steering force at the front of the pushing unit, so that the entire pushing unit can be manoeuvred faster, better and safer. Due to the BSM the pivot point of the entire pushing unit is moved to the midship direction. At sharp river bends, pushing units without BSM need the entire width of the waterway, which causes a lot of problems. A BSM assisted tow needs much less traffic space.
