| Abstract |
It was shown by means of culture experiments that the plankton diatoms Thalassiosira baltica Ostenfeld and Skeletonema subsalsum Bethge grow best in the salinity range of 2-20ppt. This is in agreement with their known preference for brackish waters in nature. Similar results were obtained with Microsiphona potamos, a diatom occurring in river plankton. 2 clones of the marine plankton sp Skeletonema costatum, one from the Oslofjord and the other from the Baltic, grew well at salinities between 8ppt and 40ppt; they both failed to grow at a salinity of 2ppt or less. |
