| Abstract |
Pleistocene threespine sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, ported for the first time from the Bautista Formation, Riverside County, California, the horizon of the Soboba plant assemblage. The Soboba sticklebacks have 4 or 5 lateral plates and were subject to predation. Remains of other fish species or other potential stickleback predators have not been found in the Bautista Formation. This is the fifth record of fossil Gasterosteus from North America. The presence of this lowland species confirms Axelrod's (1966) contention that the Soboba plant assemblage was deposited at a low elevation during a glacial period rather than at a greater elevation during an inter- glacial period. |
