Abstract
Type species for the muraenid genera Strophidon, Lycodontis, Siderea, Thyrsoidea, and Pseudechidna have been erroneously indicated in past literature, as well as in recent keys to genera of the Muraenidae. The history of the generic names is reviewed, and type species found to be the following: Strophidon (type species Strophidon longicaudata McClelland); Lycodontis (Strophidon literata McClelland); Siderea (Muraena siderea Richardson); Thyrsoidea (Muraena thyrsoidea Richardson); and Pseudechidna (Muraena brummeri Bleeker). Brief diagnoses are given for genera as currently applied. The type specimens for Muraena thyrsoidea Richardson and Muraena prosopeion Bleeker are redescribed.
