Abstract
The type specimens of Caecula pterygera Vahl (1794) and Sphagebranchus rostratus Bloch (1795), the type species of each genus, are the same species; certain features of the morphology of S. rostratus, as given by Bloch, and the type locality, as corrected by Schneider (1801), are in error. The nomenclatural implications of this decison are discussed. Species recently referred to Sphagebranchus are allotted to other genera. Stictorhinus potamius, a related new genus and species, is described from fresh waters in Brazil. Aspects of its osteology are figured and discussed.
