| Abstract |
A description is presented of previously unknown larvae of Lyconus pinnatus from notal waters of the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Diagnostic characters of species of the genus Lyconus, were established from collections of fry and adults of this genus of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. The number of abdominal andcaudal vertebrae and the rays in the unpaired and pectoral fins can be used in the diagnosis of larvae of the genus Lyconus to the species level. The morphological features of both the larvae and adults of both taxa were compared in order to assess the advisability of combining the genera Lyconus and Macruronus (Howes, 1991). |
