Monitoring of the invertebrate fauna in Wadden Sea salt marshes

| Abstract |
The influence of sheep grazing on the invertebrate fauna was investigated in the framework of the project Ecosystem Research Wadden Sea in Schleswig-Holstein. Two mainland salt marshes of five different grazing intensities each had been considered. During those investigations many biological indicators of the invertebrate fauna (e.g., Araneae, Rhynchota, Coleoptera and selected families of Diptera) were analysed. With these indicator species most of the influences caused by sheep grazing in salt marshes can be described. On the base of the results attained in this study recommendations on using important indicator taxa and species salt marsh monitoring are given. Furthermore, information on monitoring are given for representative salt marsh sites, adequate sampling methods, respectively spatial and temporal sampling frequencies. |
