| Abstract |
This study of the digestive tract allowed the histological structure of the different organs and their changes during the course of digestion, in 2 spp of cephalopods, E. cirrosa and I. illecebrosus, to be determined. The anterior part of the digestive tract, presenting a cuticular layer, is not concerned with digestion itself. Its role is one of stocking (crop) and conveying (oesophagus) of food. The stomach is also a place where digestion occurs, but with enzymes coming from the digestive gland. The mucopolysaccharidic (caecum and intestine) and proteinic ('boules' of the liver) substances are secreted rhythmically. Eledone digestive gland passes through 2 secretion phases during digestion and keeps probably the 'boules' (digestive enzymes) in its cells between meals, when the animal feeds regularly. Illex digestive gland secretes its 'boules' only after the first hour of digestion and seems to store its enzymes, between meals, in the stomach and the caecum. |
