Abstract
    Using techniques of histochemistry and electron microscopy, the cells of the digestive parts of mesenteries are described. The five types of glandular cells are compared with homologous cells of other cnidarians. The distribution of the different kinds of cells in the mesenteries of actinians constitues three specialized parts. The flagellar epithelial cells and the mucus of spumous cells of the throat and the upper portion of the mesenterial filaments facilitate the transit of prey. The secretions of the zymogen cells of the lower portion of the mesenterial filaments ensure the extracellular digestion. The final intracellular digestion takes place in phagocytic cells which are abundant in the convoluted portion of the mesenteroids. The food carrying capacity of the numerous amaeboid mesoglean cells of the actinians is discussed.
