Abstract
This book deals with ecology and taxonomy of marine-fouling bryozoans from the coastal waters off China, which is a generation of the authors' research results over years. The monograph contains eight chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the marine bryozoan foulers, and was designed to call the gentle readers of the book (especially younger ecologists working on the marine-fouling communities) attention to basic characteristics of marine-fouling bryozoans, on the basis of which such fouling organisms as hydroids, entoprocts and compound ascidians in the marine-fouling communities are distinguished from the bryozoan foulers. The second chapter deals with the fouling bryozoans attaching on buoyes, bottom-planks and bottom-plates, and underwater structures of fixed ocean oil platforms. Except for the last artificial substrate, all the sampling sites on the other man-made underwater objects covered nearly all the coastal waters off the mainland of China (see text-fig. 13) . Cultures of marine plants and animals have been growing for the ten years in China. The bryozoan foulers attaching on the cultured plants (large-sized benthic seaweeds ) and the cultured animals (mainly cultured molluscans and some cultured prawns) and ones attaching on the floating cages for the cultureshell, the culturefish and the cultureprawn have become a more and more harmful to the marine culture. The third and the fourth chapters have been designed respectively to describe the species compositions and the ecological aspects of the dominant species characteristics of the bryozoan foulers comprised in the fouling communities of cultured animals and the floating cages. The fifth chapter and the sixth chapter have been complied respectively to explain the patterns of the attachment seasons of the main bryozoan foulers found in the different coastal waters off China and their depth distribution trends in the waters. The characteristics of the colony growth given in the seventh chapter were derived from examining the colony formation processes of the seven fouling bryozoan species under the laboratory conditions. The last chapter is a systematic accounts of the fouling bryozoarns found from the coastal waters off China up to now. The descriptive statements of every fouling bryozoan species contains the following aspects: citation, chape and size of the colony, measurements, distributions, biofouling, attachment season.
