Abstract | Two methods for evaluating the required channel dimensions for two-way traffic are presented. A first evaluation tool involves fast-time simulation runs of ship meetings in a straight channel section. The safety of the simulated meetings is evaluated based on the lateral deviation of the ships, the use of controls and the net under keel clearance. With this method the influence of several parameters such as ship dimensions, loading conditions, ships’ forward speeds, water depth and lateral distance can be computed. A second study was based on real-time simulation runs carried out on two coupled full mission bridge simulators at Flanders Hydraulics Research (Flemish Government, Belgium). Both methods are applied to container vessels between 352 and 397.6 m of length and did take into account hydrodynamic effects due to (varying) water depth, banks and interaction with other vessels. The results of the simulation runs are compared with existing concept design methods. |
