Abstract | This paper presents numerical simulation results of a wind-assisted marine vessel in order to determine the potential for fuel savings and carbon abatement using wingsail wind propulsion technology (WPT). This includes a characterization of the thrust contributions from both the WPT and the conventional propulsion system, composed of a main engine coupled to a controllable pitch propeller (CPP) through a shaft. The interaction of WPTs with ship dynamics are also considered in terms of thrust as well as added resistance due to induced side force and roll motion. Predictions of WPT efficacy over a range of relevant wind speeds and directions are provided to indicate the energy capture available for various conditions at sea. Finally, estimations of fuel savings over a real-world route are provided using the proportion of total power demand delivered by the WPT and available fuel consumption data for the main propulsion engine. Notably, the results suggest further savings are possible if the operation of the main propulsion system is adapted to the available WPT thrust. |
