| Abstract | The area of origin of Antithamnionella ternifolia is unclear, although there are suspicions that it originates from the Southern Hemisphere. This non-indigenous red alga is thought to have entered – and spread in – European waters by clinging to ship hulls and ropes. In 1970, Antithamnionella ternifolia was observed for the first time in Belgium in the Sluice Dock of Ostend. The species grows on almost any type of hard substrate and reproduces quickly, two factors that contribute to its success. |
