Abstract
    Gracilaria vermiculophylla is a red seaweed native to the Pacific Northwest. In recent decades the species has spread to northern and southern Europe and the Northeast and -west of America, presumably via the transport of Japanese oysters. In 2011, this red seaweed was observed for the first time in Belgium, more specifically in the Bay of Heist. The seaweed is brownish-red in colour, strongly branched and grows mainly in sandy and muddy estuaries or bays. The species is resistant to large fluctuations in temperature and salinity. Both characteristics – eurytherm and euryhaline – are typical for successful exotic species.
