Abstract | Thalassiosira punctigera is a diatom whose region of origin is unknown. It is believed to have been introduced to Europe around 1978 with the transport of breeding oysters or ballast water. By drifting with the prevailing sea currents, this diatom continued to spread along the European coasts. This single-celled alga was discovered in the Dutch Western Scheldt in 1993. It has not yet been found in Belgium, although it is quite likely to occur here as well. This brownish-red diatom is strongly branched and grows mainly in sandy and muddy estuaries or bays. The species is resistant to large fluctuations in temperature and salinity. |
