| Abstract | The Brush-clawed shore crab Hemigrapsus takanoi was originally native to the northwestern Pacific region but was introduced to Europe via transport ships—either in ballast water or on biofouling on the hull. This small crab was first observed as established in Europe in March 1994, near La Rochelle (France). The first sightings in Belgium date back to 19 August 2003, in the port of Ostend. Both the Brush-clawed shore crab and its close relative, the Japanese shore crab Hemigrapsus sanguineu, are now abundant along our coast. |
