Abstract
Sea myrtle Baccharis halimifolia L. is an alien species native to North America. In the 17th century, it was introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant. This shrub is very popular with ornamental growers in coastal areas because of its tolerance to environments rich in salt and the high diversity of soils on which it can grow. The first observation in Belgium dates back to 1924. It was found on a plantation in the dunes of Raversyde. Since then, the plant is frequently observed in the wild in the neighbourhood of the planted individuals.
