Abstract | The Japanese oyster Crassostrea/Magallana gigas occurs naturally in Southeast Asia. The species is regarded by many as a delicacy. In 1969, it got imported to Belgium as an alternative to the failing cultivation of the native European flat oyster Ostrea edulis. It was thought that this species could not reproduce here because of the cold climate. It settles on all types of hard surfaces (e.g. dikes, piers, mussel beds etc.), on which they compete with local mussels and crustaceans for available space and food. |
