Abstract
Conrad’s false mussel Mytilopsis leucophaeata is an American species that arrived in Europe via shipping. Typically, the species occurs in estuaries, and it has been present in Belgium since 1835. The mussel occurred first in the Scheldt and later in the Yser basin. In Europe, Conrad’s false mussel causes problems (due to biofouling) in many industrial sites because the mussels settle in cooling water systems. The fact that this alien species is resistant to fluctuations in temperature and salinity makes it even more difficult to take effective measures against it.
