MNO Follow-up developments Ketenissepolder following the leveling to intertidal area in 2002 [MNO Opvolging evoluties na de afgraving van de Ketenissepolder tot slik- en schorgebied in 2002] Citation Availability: Restricted The data are withheld from general circulation and disclosure but access may be obtained on a case-by-case basis through negotiation Notes: Restrictions available at contact person Description This dataset includes data collected on morphology, sediment, benthos, vegetation, breeding birds and waterfowl on Ketenissepolder, a brackish water intertidal area on the left bank of the Scheldt. more The 'Ketenisse polder' is a former intertidal brackish marsh of 30 ha situated between the fortress of Liefkenshoek and Kallo sluice. During construction of the Liefkenshoek tunnel in the late eighties, the excavated soil was dumped between the summer dike and the dike of the marsh. The area was restored in 2002 as compensation for the construction of the North Sea container terminal on an intertidal mud flat in 1994-1995. The rubble of the summer dike and the dumped material were removed, the area was leveled with a weak slope just below mean high water level creating the starting conditions for new intertidal mudflats and marshes. The developments of this new intertidal area are monitored in cooperation with the University of Antwerp (UA) and the Administration of waterways and maritime affairs (AWZ). Sedimentation, erosion, the formation of channels and the creek system, benthic settlement, vegetation, water birds and breeding birds are observed. Six transects with sedimentation-erosion plots and piëzometers were placed perpendicular to the shoreline. Monitoring mainly takes place along these transects. Every fortnight sedimentation/erosion is measured and the top-layer of the sediment is analyzed for sediment composition, organic matter and chlorophyll-a content. The benthic settlement is monitored monthly and vegetation development is measured by means of permanent quadrates once during growing season. The University of Antwerp examines in detail the settlement and senescence of the vegetation using digital photography. Aerial photography and topographical surveying will complete this monitoring with data on geomorphological developments and vegetation settlement. In conclusion the use of the area by water birds and breeding birds is monitored. The 1,5 m long cores are set up in a triangular position, 1500 mm h.o.h. (length is 1500mm). The cores form a horizontal reference plane of which the reference height TAW is known. When strong sedimentation or erosion has taken place, the cores are prolonged or shortened. Core 1 and core 2 are connected by means of a measurement row, so the distance to the bottom can be measured each 20 cm.
