Until 1999 the collected eels were only side catches of the fish stock assessments.From 2000 on the sampling has been done specifically in the framework of pollutants. By the end of 2005 the monitoring network has 350 localities more The eel pollutant monitoring network consists of 350 localities spread over Flanders. From these localities 5 to 10 eels were collected and individually analysed for their pollution load. On a selected number of localities predatory fish were also collected and analysed.
