Abstract
The surface of salt marshes is determined by the interaction between erosion and sedimentation: what disappears from one site may be deposited further down. It is not known where freshly deposited sludge comes from: is the source situated at a distance of one kilometer or at a much greater distance? This project aims at studying erosion and sedimentation in the Wadden Sea and Westerscheldt. Using advanced techniques the origin of sediment will be assessed by 'fingerprinting'. In addition experiments will be carried out in flow channels. Several plant species will be placed at the bottom of the channel; it will be examined which species captures most of the sludge and from which species the sludge is being washed away first with increasing flow velocity.
