Abstract
The aim of COWAMA is the harmonization of the control systems of environmental quality in coastal areas of environmental value, through the strengthening of applied research that refers to the Venice Lagoon and Boka Kotorska Bay (Montenegro). In these contexts, the research results must result as being useful to the public administrations that safeguard the sustainable development of the areas in question, which are both on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. In Boka Kotorska Bay, a demonstrative action will perform the collation of samples of different environmental matrices and the analysis of chemical parameters, discussing their influence on the ecosystem in the comparison with analogous measurements already taken in Venice Lagoon. The distribution of the main pollutants will be defined, in order to prepare an operational protocol that is able, through repeated future measurements, to check the environmental impact of anthropic activities. The updating and standardization of the methods will produce a consolidation of the scientific networks and at the same time will provide the local authorities with useful tools for the integrated management of the coastal waters. The results of this project will strengthen the scientific collaboration between the bodies involved and will contribute to the development of tourism, fishing and water culture. Furthermore, the many opportunities for the training of young researchers in an international context are ideal occasions for youth integration.
