Abstract | The general aim of this project was to assess the role of coastal zones and ocean margins in terms of sources and sinks of biogenic elements associated with global change. Therefore major processes (uptake rates of inorganic nitrogen compounds such as NO3, NO2 and NH4 and ammonium mineralization rates) affecting the carbon and nitrogen cycling in those environments were studied. Sampling was carried out with the RV Belgica (11-26 Sept. 1989, 02-18 July 1990, 24 June to 10 July 1991, 16-27 June 1992 and 08-23 Oct. 1992). Data were collected in the English Channel, the shelf edge (La Chapelle bank) and the upwelling region of the Spanish coast (La Coruna and Vigo). In 1993, intercalibration experiments were performed within the framework of the European project Ocean Margin Exchange (OMEX) covering the same investigation area. |
