Abstract | The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) requested the assistance of J.J. Peters for reviewing the sediment gauging practice in Mexico and to make proposals to improve the sediment gauging network for all Mexican rivers. From the start and after having visited many gauging stations on a whole range of rivers, J.J. Peters proposed a pragmatic approach based on the selection of a limited number of samplers (mainly US DH-59 and BL-84) and to organise the sediment surveys in relation with practical problems, such as siltation in dam reservoirs, morphological problems created downstream of dams and effects of catastrophic floods in mountain rivers. During the project, 3 test sites were selected:- El Novillero, a hilly stream in Chiapas that had experienced in 1998 a catastrophic event with a change in river course
- Rio Balsas, a major stream discharging in the Pacific Ocean, to gauge the influx of sediment to the Caracol dam reservoir
- Rio Grijalva, a major stream discharging in the Gulf of Mexico, on the lower reach experiencing since thirty years severe effects of the building of 4 dams
With a comprehensive survey campaign the causes of the morphological changes downstream of the dams were identified. At the end of the PROMMA project, the Ministry of Water requested the design of structures and measures to curb the negative impact of dam operations. This project has now been initiated and will start with a diagnostic study to identify exactly the processes. The river works proposed made by J.J. Peters will be implemented if the diagnostic he made would be confirmed by the study. |
