Abstract
Because of his experience in surveying of large rivers and in morphological studies, the European Commission (EC-DG1) asked J.J. Peters in 1991 to write the Technical Specifications and Bills-of-Quantities of the Flood Action Plan Project 24 (FAP24). When this task was successfully completed and the consultancy contracts awarded to a consortium with Delft Hydraulics and Danish Hydraulic Institute, the EC-DG1 appointed J.J. Peters for acting as project advisor and supervisor from 1992 till 1996. This assistance was done within the Bangladesh governmental organisation (Flood Plan Coordination Organisation, later changed in Water Planning Organisation). When the FAP24 project was successfully completed, J.J. Peters proposed to the ECDG1 using the remaining funds for a capacity building programme in river surveying. This additional project lasted from 1987 till 2000 and comprised the refurbishment of 4 survey vessels, the procurement of modern but sustainable survey equipment and the on-thespot training of hydrographers, with special attention for the sediment gauging with Delft Bottles (DB1 and DB2), BTMA bed load samplers, ANX3-50 and ANX3-100 collapsing bag samplers.

Main project features:

River Survey Project FAP24 (Flood Action Plan) aimed at collecting data and organizing studies on the major rivers of Bangladesh, among others to develop a better understanding of their behaviour and to model them.

Activities performed:

Setting up the Technical Specifications (1991-1992). Following up the River Survey Project and advising on its implementation. Various tasks in the frame of the Flood Action Plan on behalf of the Flood Plan Coordination Organization (FPCO), later the Water Planning Organisation (WARPO). Organizing a special workshop on the Behaviour of Major River (Nov. 1993), contribution to the expert team on FAP 21/22 project.
