Abstract
It is shown that the occurence of zones of high velocity shearing is an artefact that is probably due to an inappropriate behaviour of at least one of the stability functions of the Mellor-Yamada level 2½ turbulence closure. To avoid this problem, it is useful to introduce the assumption of local equilibrium in the stability functions.
