Abstract
A general review of the history of the relationship between outdoor recreation and nature conservation in dune areas in the Netherlands is given. Important processes are the enormous increase in day-tripper numbers per ha in the seventies and the growing awareness of their impacts on dune ecosystems. Recreation impact studies are dealt with describing the period of best professional judgments, the period of empirical impact research projects and the period of multidisciplinary projects. The highlights of these projects are discussed focusing on habitat loss, trampling and disturbance. Finally some solutions for the recreation-nature conservation conflict are mentioned and discussed.
